KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPMENT

  • How pressure affects your body
  • How to choose the best gear
  • What to consider when planning your dives

You will complete Knowledge Development on your own, reading each of the chapters of the SSI Open Water Manual and watching the corresponding chapter of the SSI Open Water DVD (which also previews skills you'll learn).

In the classroom your instructor will review what you studied at home and highlight certain key aspects of the chapter to be sure you're getting it.  At the end of the course you will take an exam that makes sure you've got all the key concepts and ideas down.

CONFINED WATER DIVES

This is what it's all about – diving.  During this portion of Step 1 you'll develop basic scuba skills at the Golden Triangle YMCA in Tavares.  Here you'll learn some of the following:

  • Setting up your gear
  • How to get water out of your mask without surfacing
  • Controlling your buoyancy under water

You'll also practice some emergency skills:

  • Sharing air
  • Emergency ascents
  • Hand signals

Plus, you will be able to practice in the water, make new friends and have a great time.

STEP TWO:  OPEN WATER DIVES

After your confined water dives you, and the new friends you've made, will continue learning during four open water dives for your check out dives.  You will do four fresh water spring dives, a snorkel session and one additional spring dive.  This is where you have fun putting it all together and fully experiencing the underwater adventure.  You'll repeat many of the same skills you learned at the pool, only this time they'll be performed in the open water.

Because your pool skills have been mastered and the academic material is fresh in your mind we recommend that you complete your open water training soon after completing your last pool session.

After you are certified, you are ready to pursue a lifetime of diving adventures.  Diving offers endless opportunities for exploration, discovery, education and new experiences.  You can go as far as your passion can take you.
